Western Omelet
The Western omelet, also known as a Denver omelet, is a classic American dish that typically includes eggs, bell peppers, onions, and ham or sausage. Its origins can be traced back to the 19th century in the American West, particularly associated with cowboys and miners. The dish was likely influenced by the availability of local ingredients and the need for a hearty, portable meal. The term “Western” in the name reflects its association with the western United States, while the inclusion of ingredients like sausage and vegetables represents a fusion of culinary traditions brought by immigrants and settlers. Over time, the Western omelet has evolved, and variations can now be found in diners and restaurants across the country, often tailored to individual tastes and preferences. Today, it’s enjoyed as a filling breakfast or brunch option, showcasing the adaptability and regional influences of American cuisine.
Ingredients
3 large eggs
1/4 cup milk (optional)
Sea salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup cooked sausage (crumbled or diced)
1/4 cup bell peppers (diced, any color)
1/4 cup onion (diced)
1/4 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or your choice)
1 tablespoon butter or oil for cooking
Instructions
Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned. Remove and set aside.
In the same skillet, sauté the bell peppers and onion until they are soft, about 3-4 minutes. Set aside.
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk (if using), sea salt, and pepper until well combined.
In the same skillet, add butter or oil and heat over medium-low heat.
Pour the egg mixture into the skillet. Let it cook undisturbed for about 1-2 minutes until the edges begin to set.
Once the edges are set, sprinkle the cooked sausage, sautéed vegetables, and cheese evenly over one half of the omelet.
Carefully fold the other half of the omelet over the fillings. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts and the eggs are fully cooked.
Slide the omelet onto a plate, cut in half if desired, and enjoy your Western omelet with sausage!
Customize your omelet by adding other ingredients like mushrooms, spinach, or different types of cheese.
Serve with toast or a side of fruit for a complete breakfast.
Enjoy your meal!
