Steamed Citrus and Herb Catfish Fillet

Steamed Citrus and Herb Catfish Fillet

Steamed catfish fillets with citrus and herbs is a dish that combines various culinary traditions, often influenced by Asian, Mediterranean, and Southern cuisines. The origin of this dish can be traced back to several key elements:

Catfish is Native to North America, catfish has been a staple in Southern cooking, often prepared in various ways including frying, grilling, and steaming.

Steaming is common in Asian cuisines, particularly Chinese and Thai, where it is used to preserve the delicate flavors and moist texture of fish.

Citrus ingredients like lemon, lime, and orange are frequently used in Mediterranean and Latin American cooking to enhance the flavor of fish, providing a fresh and zesty contrast.

Fresh herbs such as cilantro, parsley, or basil are commonly used in many global cuisines. They add aroma and depth to dishes, enhancing the overall flavor profile.

The combination of these elements reflects a fusion of culinary practices, resulting in a dish that is both flavorful and healthy. The use of steaming rather than frying aligns with contemporary trends toward lighter, healthier eating.

Ingredients

 2 catfish fillets

1 orange (zested and juiced)

1 lemon (zested and juiced)

1 lime (zested and juiced)

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

Fresh herbs (such as parsley, dill, or cilantro), chopped

Sea salt and pepper to taste

Lemon slices (for garnish)

Instructions

In a bowl, mix the orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice, olive oil, garlic, zest of the citrus fruits, and chopped herbs. Season with sea salt and pepper.

Place the catfish fillets in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them. Let them marinate for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator.

Fill a steamer pot with water and bring it to a boil. If you don’t have a steamer, you can use a heatproof plate on top of a pot with boiling water.

Place the marinated catfish fillets on a heatproof plate or in a steamer basket. Pour any remaining marinade over the fillets.

Cover and steam for about 8-10 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and flakes easily with a fork.

Carefully remove the fillets from the steamer. Garnish.

Serve with a side of rice or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
