Steak and Stout Pie

Steak and Stout Pie

Ingredients

1.5 pounds beef steak, cut into bite-sized cubes

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Sea salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 large onion, chopped

2 cloves of garlic, minced

2 carrots, peeled and diced

2 celery stalks, diced

1 cup stout beer (such as Guinness)

1 cup beef broth

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon dried thyme

Pastry dough (store-bought or homemade)

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and pepper. Add the beef cubes and toss them in the flour mixture until they’re well coated.

Heat the vegetable oil in a large oven-safe pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown the beef cubes in batches until they’re nicely seared on all sides. Remove the seared beef from the pot and set it aside.

In the same pot, add the chopped onion, minced garlic, carrots, and celery. Sauté the vegetables until they’re softened and lightly golden.

Return the seared beef to the pot and pour in the stout beer, beef broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Stir everything together and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Cover the pot with a lid and transfer it to the preheated oven. Let it cook for about 2 to 2.5 hours, or until the beef is tender and the flavors are well developed.

While the beef is cooking, roll out your pastry dough on a floured surface. Cut out a circle or rectangle that will fit the top of your pie dish.

Once the beef is cooked, remove the pot from the oven and increase the oven temperature to 400°F (200°C).

Pour the beef filling into a pie dish. Place the pastry dough on top of the dish, sealing the edges. You can also create a lattice pattern or cut out decorative shapes from the dough.

Brush the pastry with beaten egg to give it a golden color when baked.

Bake the pie in the oven for about 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is golden and crispy.

Once the pie is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

You can enjoy steak and stout pie on its own or serve it with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. It’s a delicious and filling dish that is sure to be a hit! Enjoy!
