Southern Fried Chicken
Southern fried chicken has its origins in the Southern United States, specifically in the African American communities of the South. The dish is believed to have been developed by African slaves who were introduced to the cooking techniques of Scottish immigrants in the region. The traditional method of preparing southern fried chicken involves coating pieces of chicken in a seasoned flour mixture and then frying them in hot oil until they are crispy and golden brown. The result is a dish that is both flavorful and comforting, and it has become a popular part of Southern cuisine. Southern fried chicken has since become a staple of Southern cooking and is enjoyed by people all over the world. It is often served with sides such as mashed potatoes, gravy, cornbread, and collard greens, making it a classic comfort food dish.
Ingredients
1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
2 cups buttermilk
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
Place the chicken pieces in a large bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let the chicken marinate in the buttermilk for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.
In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
Heat about 1-2 inches of vegetable oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (180°C).
Remove the chicken pieces from the buttermilk, allowing any excess buttermilk to drip off. Dredge each piece of chicken in the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat the chicken thoroughly.
Carefully place the chicken pieces in the hot oil, skin-side down. Do not overcrowd the pan; you may need to fry the chicken in batches.
Fry the chicken for about 6-8 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature of the chicken should reach 165°F (74°C).
Once cooked, remove the chicken pieces from the oil and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain any excess oil.
Serve the Southern Fried Chicken hot with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, coleslaw, cornbread, or greens. Enjoy!
