Shrimp Burger

Shrimp Burger

The shrimp burger is believed to have originated in the coastal regions of the southeastern United States, particularly in the Carolinas. It is strongly associated with Calabash-style seafood, a cooking tradition from Calabash, North Carolina, where lightly battered and fried seafood is popular.

Shrimp burgers became a staple in coastal fish shacks and restaurants, especially in places like the Shrimp Shack on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, and in other parts of the Lowcountry. The dish consists of ground or chopped shrimp, often mixed with seasonings, breadcrumbs, and sometimes egg, formed into a patty, and then grilled or fried. It’s typically served on a bun with slaw or a special sauce.

While the shrimp burger has strong Southern U.S. roots, similar seafood-based sandwiches exist in other cultures, such as Japan’s Ebi Burger, made famous by fast-food chains like Lotteria and McDonald’s Japan.

Ingredients:

For the shrimp patties:

  • 1 lb shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning (or Cajun seasoning)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped green onion
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

For assembling the burger:

  • 4 burger buns
  • Radish
  • Cucumber
  • Spicy mayo (mix ½ cup mayo with 1 tbsp sriracha and 1 tsp lemon juice)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the shrimp– Roughly chop half of the shrimp into small pieces. Place the other half in a food processor and pulse until it forms a paste.
  2. Make the mixture– In a large bowl, combine the shrimp paste, chopped shrimp, panko breadcrumbs, egg, mayo, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, Old Bay, garlic powder, onion powder, parsley, green onion, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Form the patties– Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into burger patties. Refrigerate for 15-20 minutes to help them firm up.
  4. Cook the patties– Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook each patty for about 3-4 minutes per side or until golden brown and fully cooked.
  5. Assemble the burgers– Toast the burger buns, spread spicy mayo on the bottom bun, add a shrimp patty, radish and cucumbers. Top with the bun.
  6. Serve immediatelyand enjoy!
