Sausage Gravy and Biscuits
Sausage gravy and biscuits is a classic dish in Southern cuisine, particularly popular in the United States. It’s a hearty breakfast or brunch option that consists of fluffy biscuits smothered in a creamy, savory sausage gravy.
Ingredients
Biscuits (store-bought or homemade)
1 pound (450 grams) ground breakfast sausage
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
Sea salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Preheat your oven and bake the biscuits according to the package instructions or your preferred recipe. Set them aside once they’re done.
In a large skillet or saucepan, cook the ground sausage over medium heat until it’s browned and cooked through. Use a spatula or spoon to break up the sausage into smaller pieces as it cooks.
Once the sausage is cooked, sprinkle the flour evenly over it. Stir well to combine the flour with the sausage fat, creating a roux. Continue cooking for about 1 minute to cook off the raw flour taste.
Slowly pour in the milk while stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens and comes to a simmer. If the gravy becomes too thick, you can add more milk to achieve your desired consistency.
Reduce the heat to low and let the gravy simmer for a few minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste, adjusting as needed.
Split the baked biscuits in half horizontally. Place each biscuit half on a plate or in a shallow bowl.
Ladle the hot sausage gravy generously over each biscuit, ensuring that it covers both halves.
Serve the sausage gravy and biscuits immediately while still warm. It’s a comforting and filling dish that’s perfect for breakfast or brunch.
