Greek Salad

Greek Salad

Greek salad, known as “Horiatiki,” has its roots in the traditional cuisine of Greece, particularly from the rural areas. The dish is characterized by its simple, fresh ingredients, which typically include tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, red onions, olives, and feta cheese, dressed with olive oil, oregano, and sometimes vinegar. The origins of Greek salad date back to the 19th century, although similar combinations of vegetables and cheese have likely been enjoyed for centuries. The dish reflects the Mediterranean diet’s emphasis on fresh produce and healthy fats. Horiatiki is traditionally made with seasonal ingredients and can vary by region. In the past, it was often prepared by farmers and served in tavernas as a way to utilize local harvests. Today, it has become a popular dish worldwide, celebrated for its vibrant flavors and nutritious components.

Ingredients

8 grape tomatoes

1 cucumber, diced (or sliced)

1 red onion, thinly sliced

1 red onion sliced

feta cheese, crumbled

Olives (Kalamata or green), to taste

2-3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

1 teaspoon dried oregano

Sea salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

In a large bowl, combine the chopped tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, and bell pepper.

Add the Feta and Olives Gently add the crumbled feta cheese and olives to the bowl.

Drizzle the olive oil and red wine vinegar (if using) over the salad. Sprinkle the dried oregano, salt, and pepper to taste.

Mix everything together carefully to avoid breaking the feta too much.

Enjoy immediately or let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.

You can add other ingredients like capers or fresh herbs (like parsley or mint) for extra flavor.

Serve with warm pita bread or as a side dish with grilled meats.
