Frutti di Mare

Frutti di Mare

“Frutti di mare” is an Italian term that translates to “fruits of the sea” in English. It refers to a variety of seafood typically used in Italian cuisine, such as mussels, clams, shrimp, squid, and other shellfish. The origin of the term and the dish can be traced back to Italy, where seafood has always been an important part of the cuisine due to the country’s extensive coastline and historical reliance on fishing as a food source.

Ingredients

1 pound mixed seafood (shrimp, mussels, scallops, clams, calamari)

2 tbsp olive oil

2-3 garlic cloves, minced

1 can San Marzano tomatoes

1/2 cup white wine

Sea salt and pepper to taste

Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Fresh parsley, chopped

Linguine or spaghetti pasta

Instructions

  1. Clean the seafood: If using fresh seafood, make sure it is cleaned properly. Devein the shrimp, scrub the mussels and clams, and clean the calamari and scallops.
  1. In a large skillet or pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  1. Add the mixed seafood to the pan and sauté for a few minutes until the shrimp turn pink and the mussels and clams start to open.
  1. Pour in the white wine and let it simmer for a couple of minutes to cook off the alcohol.
  1. Add the diced tomatoes to the pan and season with sea salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes (if using). Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
  1. Cover the pan and let the seafood simmer in the tomato sauce for about 5-10 minutes, or until the mussels and clams have fully opened.
  1. While the seafood is cooking, cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente.
  1. Once the seafood is cooked, taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if needed. Stir in the chopped parsley.
  1. Serve the Frutti di mare over the cooked pasta and garnish with additional parsley. Enjoy!
