Fried Flounder Sandwich
The fried flounder sandwich is a popular dish in the United States, particularly in areas along the East Coast and in the Southern states. Flounder is a type of flatfish that is commonly found in North American coastal waters, and it is often fried and served on a sandwich with various toppings such as lettuce, tomato, pickles, and tartar sauce. It is likely that it developed in coastal communities where flounder was a readily available and popular seafood choice. The sandwich may have evolved as a way to enjoy the delicate flavor and flaky texture of flounder in a convenient handheld form. Today, you can find fried flounder sandwiches on the menus of many seafood restaurants and diners throughout the United States, especially in regions with a strong tradition of seafood cuisine.
Ingredients
4 flounder fillets
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup breadcrumbs
Sea salt and pepper to taste
Vegetable oil for frying
4 sandwich buns
Lettuce, tomato, pickles, and any other sandwich toppings you like.
Tartar sauce or your favorite sauce for serving.
Instructions
Season the flounder fillets with sea salt and pepper on both sides.
Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumbs.
Dredge each flounder fillet in the flour, shaking off any excess.
Dip the floured fillets into the beaten eggs, making sure they are well coated.
Finally, coat the fillets with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Fry the breaded flounder fillets in the hot oil for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
Remove the cooked fillets from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
Toast the sandwich buns in a separate pan or in the oven.
Assemble your sandwiches by placing a fried flounder fillet on the bottom half of each bun.
Top with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and any other toppings you like.
Spread tartar sauce or your favorite sauce on the top half of the buns.
Put the top bun on each sandwich and serve hot.
Enjoy!
