Club Sandwich
The club sandwich, often simply referred to as a “club,” is believed to have originated in the United States in the late 19th century. The most common story attributes its creation to a private club in Saratoga Springs, New York, where it was first served around the 1890s. The classic version typically includes layers of turkey or chicken, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise, all sandwiched between three slices of toasted bread.
The term “club” is thought to stand for “chicken and lettuce under bacon,” though this is more of a folk etymology than a confirmed origin. The sandwich gained popularity quickly and became a staple in restaurants and diners across the country, particularly for its satisfying combination of flavors and textures. Its appeal has persisted, making it a beloved item on menus worldwide.
