Korean Crunchy Chicken with Sweet and Spicy Sauce

Korean Crunchy Chicken with Sweet and Spicy Sauce

Korean crunchy chicken with sweet and spicy sauce, has its origins in South Korea. The dish is believed to have been inspired by American fried chicken but has evolved into a distinct and popular Korean culinary creation.

One of the key factors that set Korean fried chicken apart is the double frying method, which results in an extra crispy and crunchy texture. The sweet and spicy sauce that is often used on Korean fried chicken is typically made with a combination of ingredients like gochujang (Korean red chili paste), soy sauce, garlic, ginger, honey, and other seasonings.

Ingredients

For the chicken

1 lb chicken wings or chicken drumettes

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup cornstarch

1 tsp sea salt

1 tsp black pepper

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp paprika

2 eggs

Oil for frying

For the sweet and spicy sauce

1/3 cup ketchup

1/4 cup gochujang (Korean red chili paste)

1/4 cup honey

2 tbsp soy sauce

2 tbsp rice vinegar

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tsp grated ginger

Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cornstarch, sea salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.

In another bowl, whisk the eggs.

Dip each piece of chicken into the egg mixture, then coat it with the flour mixture. Shake off any excess flour.

Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (180°C). Fry the chicken in batches until golden brown and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes per batch. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

In a small saucepan, combine ketchup, gochujang, honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, garlic, and ginger. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly, about 5 minutes.

Toss the fried chicken in the sweet and spicy sauce until well coated.

Serve the Korean crunchy chicken hot, garnished with sesame seeds and chopped green onions.
