Meatball Sub

Meatball Sub

The meatball sub is a popular sandwich that is believed to have originated in the United States. It typically consists of meatballs, marinara sauce, and cheese, served in a long roll or sub-style bread. The exact origins of the meatball sub are not entirely clear, but it is widely associated with Italian-American cuisine, reflecting the influence of Italian immigrants on American food culture.

Ingredients

For the meatballs

1 pound ground beef

1/2 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

1 egg

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon sea salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

2 tablespoons olive oil

For the sandwich

4 to 6 hoagie rolls or sub rolls

1 1/2 cups marinara sauce

1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Additional grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, egg, garlic, sea salt, black pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix the ingredients together until well combined.

Shape the meat mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan, and cook until browned on all sides. This should take about 6-8 minutes. Once browned, transfer the meatballs to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

While the meatballs are cooking, slice the hoagie or sub rolls in half lengthwise and place them on a baking sheet.

Spoon a little marinara sauce onto each roll, then place a few meatballs on top. Spoon additional marinara sauce over the meatballs and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.

Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Once done, remove the baking sheet from the oven and, if desired, sprinkle the meatball subs with additional grated Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley for garnish.

Enjoy!
