Ingredients

1 whole chicken, cut into pieces

2 cups buttermilk

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon salt

1 tablespoon black pepper

1 tablespoon paprika

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)

Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

Place the chicken pieces in a large bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let the chicken marinate in the buttermilk for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best results.

In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.

Heat about 1-2 inches of vegetable oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (180°C).

Remove the chicken pieces from the buttermilk, allowing any excess buttermilk to drip off. Dredge each piece of chicken in the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat the chicken thoroughly.

Carefully place the chicken pieces in the hot oil, skin-side down. Do not overcrowd the pan; you may need to fry the chicken in batches.

Fry the chicken for about 6-8 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature of the chicken should reach 165°F (74°C).

Once cooked, remove the chicken pieces from the oil and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Serve the Southern Fried Chicken hot with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, coleslaw, cornbread, or greens. Enjoy!
